UK: Right-wing groups and counterprotesters plan demonstrations in central London, June 1
Right-wing groups and counterprotesters plan demonstrations in central London, UK, June 1. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Right-wing groups and counterprotesters are planning rival demonstrations in central London June 1:
The English Defence League (EDL) will lead other right-wing groups and activists on a march from Victoria to Parliament Square, starting at 12:00.
In parallel, counterprotesters led by Stand Up to Racism will gather at 11:00 by Downing Street on Whitehall and then march to Parliament Square.
Based on similar demonstrations, several hundred to low thousands are likely to participate each demonstration. The convergence of both marches on Parliament Square will likely lead to significant localized disruptions.
Police will likely deploy significant additional resources to monitor the gatherings, and will likely close roads around Parliament Square to maintain separation between the rival protests. Security measures may prompt localized transport disruptions. Although police will work to keep rival groups apart, clashes are possible.
Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central London June 1. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement personnel. Leave the area immediately in the event of violence.
