US: Flight disruptions likely in parts of Northeast, including New York metropolitan area and Boston, through late May 23 due to severe weather

Severe weather disrupts flights in New York metropolitan area and Boston, Mass., US, May 23; lingering flight delays, cancellations likely.

Warning

Flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, will likely affect airports in parts of the Northeast, including the New York metropolitan area and Boston, Massachusetts, through at least late May 23 due to thunderstorms that have affected the region. As of around 13:15, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had issued thunderstorm-related ground delay programs at LaGuardia (LGA) and Boston Logan International (BOS) airports that were scheduled to remain in effect until at least 23:29 and 23:59 May 23, respectively; flight departures to LGA were reportedly delayed by an average of 97 minutes, and flight departures to BOS were delayed by an average of 75 minutes. The FAA may modify or rescind the ground delay programs on short notice.

The FAA may issue additional weather-related ground delay programs and/or ground stops for airports in the Northeast region over the coming hours, including at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), which was subject to a ground stop earlier in the day, as well as at Newark Liberty International (EWR), Teterboro (TEB), and Westchester County (HPN) airports. Residual disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs.

Confirm flight reservations if scheduled to travel via an airport in the New York metropolitan area or Boston. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
