US: Flight disruptions likely in the Washington, DC, area, through late May 29 due to severe weather

Severe weather disrupting flights in Washington, DC Area, US, May 29. Lingering delays, cancellations likely.

Warning

Flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, will likely affect airports in the Washington, DC, area through at least late May 29 due to thunderstorms in the region. As of around 14:40, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued weather-related ground stop programs at Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD); the measures are scheduled to remain in effect until at least 15:00 and 15:30, respectively. The FAA may modify or extend the ground delay programs on short notice. Numerous flights have been significantly delayed, and residual disruptions will probably extend for hours after the measures are lifted as carriers reposition aircraft and work through their passenger backlogs.

The FAA may issue additional weather-related ground delay programs and/or ground stops for airports in the area, including Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) in Maryland. Residual disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs.

Confirm flight reservations if scheduled to travel via an airport in the Washington, DC, area. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
