Protests likely to continue near Chaman-Spin Boldak crossing in Afghanistan, Pakistan through mid-June. Clashes leave 40 injured on June 7.
Activists will likely continue their ongoing protest campaign near the Chaman-Spin Boldak border crossing along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border through at least mid-June. In recent weeks, various demonstrations have denounced a new visa requirement for cross-border travel. The protests have caused disruptions along several thoroughfares, including the National Highway 25 (N-25) at Khojak Pass in Balochistan Province.
On June 7, clashes occurred between police and activists following the arrest of several activists holding a sit-in demonstration. The clashes have left at least 40 people injured, including 17 law enforcement personnel. Reports indicate protesters purportedly attacked government buildings and public installations to demand the release of the detainees. The unrest has caused widespread disruptions in nearby locations, with operators suspending in some business centers, including Mall Road. Similar violent incidents have materialized since early May.
Over the coming days, authorities on both sides of the border will almost certainly maintain heightened security measures, including deploying additional personnel. Shipping and supply chain disruptions are likely, especially if authorities close the border in case of significant clashes or illegal crossing attempts. Traffic disruptions due to blockades are particularly likely to affect highways and entry and exit points in the Chaman District of Pakistan. Additional protests and sporadic clashes are almost certain to occur.
The Chaman-Spin Boldak crossing is approximately 100 km (59 miles) southeast of Kandahar city, Afghanistan, and about 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Quetta, Pakistan.
Avoid the impacted area due to possible additional violence. Do not navigate roadblocks due to the threat of violence. Reconfirm the status of the crossing before traveling or processing cargo shipments through the area. Seek alternative ground transport routes if border closures or blockades occur. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
