Angola: Activist groups plan to demonstrate in Luanda on June 22

Activist groups plan to stage demonstrations in Luanda, Angola, on June 22. Increased security likely, avoid all protests.

Warning

Two activist groups plan to stage unrelated demonstrations in Luanda on June 22. The first, and probably the larger of the two events, is organized by the Independent League for Angolan Women (LIMA) to celebrate the 52 anniversary of its founding. Participants plan to assemble near the Asa Branca Market starting at 09:00 before marching to Tala Hady for an associated rally slotted to occur at 13:00. The event could draw several hundred participants.

In the second and likely the smaller of the two, activists associated with the National Unity for Angolan Revolution Movement (UNTRA, Unidade nacional para total Revolucao de Angola) plan to stage a protest rally to denounce the high cost of living, increased crime rates, unemployment, and alleged arbitrary arrest of its members. Organizers have not announced any start times or locations for the protest. It remains unknown the number of participants the event may draw.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence near any demonstrations that materialize. Localized transportation and business disruptions are possible. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out if activists become overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. If clashes occur, immediately leave the vicinity and take shelter in a secure nongovernmental building. Plan accordingly for possible transport and business disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities.

LIMA was founded on June 18, 1973, during a period of domestic political and economic struggles in Angola at the time. LIMA represents the women's branch of the main opposition political party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA, Uniao Nacional para a Independencia Total de Angola).
