Women's rights activists to demonstrate in several cities across Brazil through at least June 17. Localized disruptions likely.
Activists affiliated with several women's rights organizations plan to protest in a number of cities across Brazil June 14-17. The purpose of the action is to oppose a bill that the groups assert could further limit abortion rights.
Organizers have confirmed the following gathering locations and start times:
Sao Paulo: Museum of Art of Sao Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) from 18:00 June 14 and from 15:00 June 15
Rio de Janeiro: Cinelandia from 18:00 June 14
Belo Horizonte: Praca Sete de Setembro from 17:00 June 14
Porto Alegre: Esquina Democratica from 17:00 June 14
Curitiba: Praca Santos Andrade from 18:00 June 14
Salvador: Estacao da Lapa from 17:30 June 14
Fortaleza: Praca do Ferreira from 08:00 June 15
Goiania: Praca Universitaria from 09:00 June 15
Natal: Midway Mall from 14:00 June 15
Vitoria: Legislative Assembly of Espirito Santo from 11:00 June 15
Recife: Praca do Derby from 16:00 June 17
Protests are also likely in other cities, especially state capitals. Participation will probably vary significantly depending on location; demonstrations in the cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte will probably draw the largest numbers of participants. Localized transit and business disruptions are likely. Most protests are likely to remain largely peaceful; however, clashes between protesters and security forces remain possible if the police attempt to forcibly disperse participants.
Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs nearby, leave the vicinity immediately. Reconfirm the status of driving routes before travel; consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the demonstrations and any related disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
