Ecuador: Protesters plan to gather in Quito June 12, other urban centers June 13

Activists plan to protest in Quito June 12, other urban centers across Ecuador June 13. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the Popular Front (Frente Popular), which is made up of several organizations, plan to gather in Quito on June 12, and in other urban centers on June 13. In Quito, protesters will gather outside the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (Instituto Ecuatoriano del Seguro Social, IESS) from 16:00 before marching in central Quito. On June 13, activists will gather in other locations across the country and march to provincial government buildings (gobernaciones). The purpose of the action is to oppose the government's alleged plans to cut fuel subsidies.

Heightened security and localized transport and business disruptions are likely in Quito on June 12 and near other protest areas across the country on June 13. Low-level confrontations cannot be ruled out, especially if the authorities attempt to forcibly disperse protesters.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating in Quito June 12 or near other protest areas on June 13. Depart the area at the first sign of violence.
