Georgia, Russia: Disruptions due to severe weather conditions at Georgia-Russia border June 6
Verkhnii-Lars crossing point Georgia-Russia border temporarily closed due to severe weather, landlides and flooding, June 6.
As of June 6, severe weather and flooding have caused disruptions between Georgia and Russia. Authorities have temporarily suspended traffic at the Verkhnii-Lars border crossing point at the Georgia-Russia border. The E117/S3 highway leading to the border crossing point is reportedly closed near Gveleti village due to severe weather conditions and a landslide. Weather conditions are likely to deteriorate in the coming hours. Moderate to severe thunderstorms have been issued in the southern regions of North Ossetia, Russia.
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger further flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil. Disruptive weather and flooding could impact power supply and telecommunications.
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions. Avoid the impacted area at the Georgia-Russia border. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of electricity outages.
