Political activists plan protests in multiple cities across Greece in the evening hours June 14; increased security likely.

Warning

Political activists plan to gather and protest in multiple cities across Greece from 18:30 June 14. The purpose of the gatherings is to denounce the deaths of over 600 migrants in a maritime incident involving the Greek Coast Guard that occurred on June 14, 2023. The major events will occur in the following cities:

  • Athens: Participants will gather at Propylaea from 19:00

  • Heraklion: Participants will gather at Lions Square, from 18:30

  • Patras: Participants will gather at Georgiou Square from 19:00

  • Thessaloniki: Participants will gather at the Statue of Eleftherios Venizelos from 19:00

  • Volos: Participants will gather at Eleftherias Square from 19:00.

Gatherings of minor impact will also occur in Ioannina, Xanthi, and Chania. Further minor events might occur in smaller urban centers. Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor the gathering. Localized road travel and transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Limited confrontations between law enforcement officers and protesters are possible in major urban centers.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
