Informational

Further protests by student groups are likely in Kerala State through early July to denounce the alleged shortage in northern Kerala's higher secondary education seats, or plus-one seats. The Kerala Students Union (KSU), affiliated with the opposition Indian National Congress (INC), has called for a statewide education strike June 25. Other organizations, including the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and the Students Federation of India (SFI), are also participating in the protests. Recently, related demonstrations have occurred in urban centers such as Kollam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram, and Wayanad. Some gatherings have led to clashes with police, prompting the use of water cannons to disperse demonstrators.

Further gatherings of various types, including street marches and education sector strikes, will likely occur in urban centers over the coming days. Potential rally sites include prominent government buildings, educational facilities, Regional Deputy Director (RDD) of Education offices, public squares, and major thoroughfares. In the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, gatherings are likely near the Legislative Assembly and General Education Department. Dozens to hundreds of people could participate in each gathering.

Authorities will likely deploy additional security in potential rally sites and monitor related demonstrations. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if demonstrators march on or block roadways. Police may forcibly disperse crowds, including with water cannon.

Avoid all protests. Plan routes to circumvent potential demonstration sites and allow additional time for travel. Monitor local media for updated information about security and road conditions. Heed all official traffic and security advisories. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area.
