Indonesia: Activists plan to stage protests outside KNPB offices across West Papua Province 14:00-17:00 June 10

Activists plan to demonstrate outside KNPB offices across West Papua Province, Indonesia, 14:00-17:00 June 10. Tight security likely.

Informational

Activists from the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) plan to stage protests outside KNPB offices across West Papua Province 14:00-17:00 June 10. The purpose of the action is to show solidarity with the indigenous Melanesian inhabitants (Kanak people) of New Caledonia following a period of violent unrest that began May 13. While turnout remains unclear, dozens of people could attend each gathering.

Heightened security is likely around protest sites, mainly in urban centers. While violence is unlikely, isolated scuffles are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering/unruly sections of demonstrators. Further traffic disruptions are possible through the evening of June 10, especially if activists hold additional road blockades or street marches.

Exercise caution around the rally sites. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; use alternative routes to circumvent rally sites. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest details, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
