Heightened security, protests, transport, and business disruptions are likely in Asuncion and surrounding areas, including Luque, amid the 54th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) on June 25-28.
Activists, members of non-government organizations, and religious leaders will hold several events related to the assembly in several locations, including the Sheraton Hotel in Asuncion on June 25 and Casa de Retiro Emaus in Luque from June 25-26. On June 26, there will be official events at Paraguay's Central Bank in Asuncion and the Paraguayan Olympic Committee in Luque. Most assembly events will be held at the headquarters of the South American Football Federation (Confederacion Sudamericana de Futbol, CONMEBOL) in Luque June 27-28.
More than 1,000 people are likely to attend the different events, representing more than 50 countries, between members of the OAS and observers. Heightened security and road closures are likely around these locations in Asuncion and Luque through at least the morning of June 29. Protests are likely near the event sites, especially the CONMEBOL headquarters. Clashes are unlikely to occur but cannot be ruled out.
