Philippines: Authorities arrest two suspects allegedly involved in abduction of a Chinese national in Taguig City as of June 20
Police arrest two suspects in kidnapping of a Chinese national in Taguig City, Philippines, as of June 20. Five other suspects at large.
Authorities announced the arrest of two suspects allegedly involved in the kidnapping of a Chinese national as of the morning of June 20. The victim was kidnapped in an apartment in Barangay Santa Ana, Taguig City, June 17 after meeting with someone he had gotten to know through an online dating application. The pair met at a fast food restaurant in Bonifacio Global City before heading to the perpetrator's apartment. The kidnappers released the victim after receiving a ransom. A manhunt is underway to arrest five remaining accomplices still at large.
The threat of kidnapping in the Philippines remains high. Several organized crime syndicates that focus exclusively on kidnap-for-ransoms operate in and around the National Capital Region. Criminal groups typically target workers or customers of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) companies, Chinese nationals, East and South Asian expatriates, short-term travelers, and members of the Chinese-Filipino business community and their families. Criminal abductions of Westerners are less common, though the threat remains. Authorities rescue most victims, or kidnappers release them unharmed relatively quickly after receiving a ransom payment.
