Striking teachers to protest outside Fort Railway Station in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 11:00 June 26. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Striking members of teacher and principal unions plan to demonstrate opposite the Fort Railway Station in Colombo from 11:00 June 26. The purpose of the action is to demand resolution of grievances related to salary anomalies, fee hikes, non-promotion of staff, and proposed privatization, among others. Organizers claim 250,000 staff from over 10,000 schools nationwide are participating in the one-day work stoppage; hundreds of people may attend the rally in Colombo, and block or march on roadways.

Additional unannounced rallies may occur in the city; participants may also gather at or march from popular demonstration venues, including the De Soysa/Liberty Circus intersections, Galle Face Green, key government buildings, public squares, and major roadways.

Security personnel typically monitor protests; roadblocks and security cordons are possible near prominent government buildings in the vicinity. Localized transport disruptions are probable, especially in case of a large turnout. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. Security forces have previously used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrations. Associated disruptions to local businesses may occur if significant violence breaks out.

Avoid the protest due to possible clashes. Plan for travel delays in the affected area, mainly to and from Fort Railway Station. Do not attempt to navigate roadblocks; wait for police to clear them before proceeding. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest plans as organizers may change details at short notice. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
