Turkiye: Activists to demonstrate in Istanbul June 29

Opposition activists to protest at Kartal Square in Istanbul, Turkiye from 19:00 June 29. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with a number of opposition parties and civil society organizations plan to protest at Kartal Square (Kartal Meydani) in Istanbul from 19:00 June 29. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce the government's appointment of trustee public servants. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, potentially escalating to clashes, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Kartay Meydani. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.

The demonstration follows the June 3 arrest of Mehmet Siddik Nakit, an opposition candidate recently elected mayor of the southeastern city of Hakkari, and his replacement with a government-appointed trustee. The decision was met with protests in Hakkari and heightened security measures in several areas of southeastern Turkiye.
