Africa: Disruptions regionwide due to IT outage, July 19 /update 1
Regionwide air travel disruptions in Sub-Saharan Africa following a global IT outage, July 19. Reconfirm flights.
Further disruptions have occurred in regions across Africa following a communication issue prompted by a Microsoft service outage, July 19. Major US airlines - American (AA), Delta (DL), United (UA), and Allegiant Air (G4) - issued a global ground stop for all flights following the outage. Major African carriers - including South African Airways (SA), Airlink (4Z), and Kenya Airways (KQ) - have also been impacted, though reports suggest that they have continued to operate. It is unclear when normal operations will resume.
The impact on other sectors, including business, banking, mass transit, and telecommunication, has not been as severe as elsewhere on the globe; however, some disruptions are possible.
Flight delays and cancellations are probable in the coming hours. Lingering disruptions are likely after normal services resume as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs.
Reconfirm flight schedules through at least July 19. Arrive at the airport well in advance of scheduled departure times; long lines are likely at curbside and terminal check-in counters until normal network operations resume. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
