Cote d'Ivoire: Activists plan to stage demonstration at Malian Embassy in Abidjan's Plateau District starting at 10:00 Aug. 2

Activists to protest outside Malian Embassy in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, 10:00-11:00 Aug. 2; increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the Association of Malians of ECOWAS (Association des Maliens de la CEDEAO) plan to stage a demonstration in front of the Malian Embassy in Abidjan's Plateau District 10:00-11:00 Aug. 2. The purpose of the protest is to denounce Mali's withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). It was not immediately clear if local officials had or would authorize the protest, or how many people would participate in the rally if it goes ahead.

If the demonstration occurs, authorities will probably deploy a heightened security presence to monitor it. Transport disruptions will likely affect the vicinity of the Malian Embassy amid the protest. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out, particularly if the protesters are disruptive or ignore any orders from police to disperse.

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the vicinity of the demonstration and any related disruptions. If violence occurs, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Confirm any appointments at the Malian Embassy scheduled for Aug. 2. Abide by all official directives.
