India: Further rallies denouncing Indian politician's remarks possible nationwide through at least early July

Further rallies denouncing INC leader Rahul Gandhi's remarks possible across India through at least early July. Clashes reported.

Warning

Further rallies denouncing an Indian politician's remarks are possible nationwide through at least early July. On July 1, Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) party and Member of Parliament, made remarks in the lower house that some interpreted as anti-religious. Activists have since staged protests in various places, such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, and New Delhi. Several demonstrations have taken place near INC party offices. Clashes between rival political groups have occurred in some locations, including between INC supporters and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists in Ahmedabad.

Activists could stage gatherings of varying types, including sit-ins and marches, over the coming days. Counterdemonstrations are possible at short notice. Potential gathering sites include utility provider offices, government buildings, press clubs, public squares, and thoroughfares. Participation will vary by locale and sponsoring entity, with the largest turnout likely to occur under any BJP-related gatherings.

Authorities will likely monitor such gatherings and could use force to disperse overly unruly crowds. Further clashes between activists and police and between members of opposing rival groups cannot be ruled out. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized transport and business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
