Maratha community activists to hold rallies across Maharashtra State, India, July 10-13. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists from the Maratha community plan to hold rallies across the Maharashtra State July 10-13 to demand the State increase the reservation of Marathi people in government jobs and education ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election in late 2024. Although participation numbers will vary by location, the largest demonstrations will likely have thousands of participants. As of July 9, the exact location and timing of the rallies remain unclear. Planned locations include:

  • July 10: Dharashiv

  • July 11: Beed

  • July 12: Jalna

  • July 13: Aurangabad

Potential gathering sites include prominent government buildings and public squares. Related protests could also occur in other locations, such as Mumbai, Pune, Shirdi, and Nashik.

Authorities will likely monitor any such rallies and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators will likely march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

As a precaution, avoid any demonstrations that materialize. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
