Indonesia: Bus drivers protesting at Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue and Jakarta City Hall as of the morning of July 30
Bus drivers demonstrating across Central Jakarta, Indonesia, as of the morning of July 30. Tight security, transport disruptions reported.
Protests by bus drivers are ongoing across Central Jakarta, including at the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue and Jakarta City Hall, as of the morning of July 30; workers plan to gather until 16:00. The action is to denounce the recent enforcement of Transjakarta regulations against several operators. At least a few hundred bus drivers are participating in the demonstrations.
Increased security measures are likely near the protest sites over the coming hours. Authorities have deployed hundreds of security personnel across Central Jakarta to impose security cordons, traffic diversions, and road closures. Minor scuffles are possible, especially if police attempt to disperse demonstrators trying to bypass security barriers.
Traffic diversions are in place along Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan between the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue and the US Embassy. Reports also indicate ongoing disruptions to Transjakarta services, including at least 29 Mikrotrans service routes. While officials have announced they would provide alternative fleets to reduce service disruptions, lingering transport delays are likely. Traffic disruptions may persist along several major roads, including Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur, and Jalan M.H. Thamrin, through the evening of July 30, especially if activists stage road blockades. Additional unannounced solidarity protests may also occur at the Transjakarta Office in East Jakarta.
Avoid the protest sites as a precaution. In the event of scuffles, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; do not navigate roadblocks. Heed all local security and traffic advisories. Confirm bus and other transport schedules in advance. Monitor trusted local media for protest updates, as organizers may not announce them in advance.
