Indonesia: Labor protest ongoing across Central Jakarta as of morning July 3

Labor unions are protesting across Central Jakarta, Indonesia, as of morning July 3. Tight security, transport disruptions certain.

Informational

Labor protests are underway across Central Jakarta, including at the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue and State Palace as of 09:30 July 3. Demonstrators will also march to the following locations the afternoon of July 3: the Ministry of Communication and Information, the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Transportation, and the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU). Participants are denouncing the mass layoff of textile workers, perceived to be triggered by a new regulation issued by the Ministry of Trade. Organizers claim that thousands of protesters will attend the event.

Increased security measures will almost certainly occur around the announced protest sites over the coming hours. Authorities have deployed 1,389 security personnel across Central Jakarta to ensure order. Police will likely impose traffic restrictions, including security cordons, diversions, and road closures. Minor scuffles are possible, especially if police attempt to disperse demonstrators trying to bypass security barriers. Traffic disruptions are likely along several major roads, including Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur, and Jalan Veteran, especially if activists hold additional road blockades. Increased congestion and demand for public transport are also likely as a large number of attendees arrive at and leave protest sites.

Avoid the protest sites as a precaution. In the event of scuffles, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; do not navigate roadblocks. Monitor trusted local media for protest updates, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
