Indonesia: Student activists to demonstrate outside State Palace in Jakarta from 14:00 July 22
Activists to protest at State Palace in Jakarta, Indonesia, from14:00 July 22. Tight security, transport disruptions certain.
Activists from the All Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM SI) plan to protest outside the State Palace in Jakarta from 14:00 July 22. The action is to denounce the current administration and its perceived flaws, including the controversial Public Housing Savings (Tapera) policy and President Joko Widodo's alleged influence in the Regional Elections. While turnout remains unclear, hundreds of supporters could attend the demonstration.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain increased security measures around the protest site through July 22. Approximately 1,231 security personnel will deploy along Jalan Majapahit and Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat from Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue to the State Palace. Police will probably erect barricades around the State Palace; traffic restrictions, including security cordons, diversions, and road closures, are likely. Isolated scuffles are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse unruly sections of demonstrators. Traffic disruptions are likely along Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, Jalan Veteran, and Jalan Veteran III, especially if activists hold road blockades.
Avoid the protest site as a precaution. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; do not navigate roadblocks. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest details, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
