Initial reports indicate that at least one person was killed and 30 others injured in the incident. The derailed passenger train was traveling from Magadi to Kajiado. The cause of the derailment is not yet known.

Heightened security and localized transportation disruptions are likely near the derailment site until clearance operations and investigations end.

Magadi is located 87 km (54 miles) southwest of Nairobi.
