Unionized healthcare workers plan to strike and protest in Nairobi, Kenya, from July 8. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.
Unionized health workers affiliated with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) plan to launch an indefinite strike and protest in Nairobi on July 8,. The purpose of the action denouncing the government's alleged failure to honor the terms of an agreement that ended a work stoppage by the KMPDU in early May. As part of the strike, participating workers will also stage a sit-in outside the Ministry of Health beginning at 09:00 July 8. Labor leaders plan to continue the strike and protest until the union's demands are met.
Unless averted, the strike will likely affect non-emergency health services at hospitals; facilities will continue to provide emergency treatment. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are probable near any protests that materialize. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Confirm all medical appointments as a precaution until the strike concludes. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed instructions from authorities.
