Rwanda: Celebrations possible nationwide in the coming days following July 15 general election /update 1

Celebrations possible across Rwanda in the coming days following July 15 general election. Final results scheduled for release July 27.

Informational

Celebrations are possible nationwide following the July 15 general election. Preliminary results indicate that Incumbent President Paul Kagame of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi) won a fourth term with 99,15 percent of the vote. Complete provisional results are expected on July 20, but final results should be announced on July 27.

An increased security presence, as well as road traffic and business disruptions, are likely in the vicinity of celebrations and political events, particularly in Kigali. Political violence involving rival supporters is not anticipated.

Remain apprised of the political situation and avoid discussing political topics in public. Avoid political gatherings and celebrations as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.

Under the Kagame administration, Rwanda has experienced political stability and economic growth. However, humanitarian organizations frequently criticize Kagame’s regime and denounce a lack of civil liberties and human rights violations. Kagame won the 2017 election with almost 99% of the vote amid reports of intimidation of opposition activists, media censorship, and electoral irregularities.
