Activists plan to stage competing demonstrations at the Embassy of Turkiye on Belgrave Square in London on the evening of July 20. The National Federation of Cypriots in the UK has called for a demonstration outside of the diplomatic facility from 18:30 to 20:30 to demand a departure of Turkish military forces from the island of Cyprus and the unification of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with the Republic of Cyprus. The demonstration is slated to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Turkish military intervention on the island. Counterprotesters plan to demonstrate at the Embassy of Turkiye from 18:00 to 21:00. The number of people who may participate in the demonstrations was not immediately clear.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Confrontations between competing groups of demonstrators or between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Embassy of Turkiye on the evening of July 20. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
