Muslim worshipers marching towards Downing Street, London, UK, as of late afternoon July 17. Road and underground disruptions reported.
Muslim worshipers commemorating Ashura are marching through central London as of late afternoon July 17. Large crowds moved along Oxford Street and will continue to march to Downing Street via Regent Street, Haymarket Street, Trafalgar Square, and Whitehall Street. Authorities have deployed heightened security and have closed several roads to facilitate the event. Marble Arch underground station is closed to traffic towards Oxford; service disruptions are also reported at Notting Hill Gate station.
Heightened security, road closures, and transport disruptions will likely continue for several hours. Though unlikely, isolated confrontations between supporters of opposing groups cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the procession area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the march route. Seek alternatives to travel via Marble Arch or Notting Hill Gate stations. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
