Australia: Activists to stage demonstrations in Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney on Aug. 27

Activists plan demonstrations in support of prominent union in multiple cities across Australia on Aug. 27. Increased security likely.

Informational

Activists plan to stage demonstrations in multiple cities on Aug. 27, in solidarity with the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) after the union was placed into administration. Organizers have confirmed protest plans in the following cities:

  • Adelaide: Parliament of South Australia, 12:00

  • Brisbane: Queens Garden, 11:00

  • Cairns: Esplanade,11:00

  • Canberra: Woden Town Square, 11:00

  • Melbourne: Trades Hall Lygon Street, 11:00

  • Perth: Forrest Chase, 11:00

  • Sydney: Parliament of New South Wales, 11:00

The largest rallies could draw hundreds of participants; other rallies will likely attract dozens of attendees.

Authorities will likely deploy additional security to monitor the demonstrations. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if activists occupy or march along nearby roads. Increased congestion and demand for public transport are also likely as a large number of attendees arrive at and leave protest sites. Significant violence is not likely; however, scuffles between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest sites as a precaution. In the event of scuffles, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Plan for localized transport disruptions and allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
