Informational

Venezuelan opposition supporters plan to demonstrate in multiple cities across Australia Aug. 17. Participants are calling for the recognition of Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the winner of the July 28 presidential elections. Organizers have announced the following events:

  • Adelaide: Victoria Square 15:00

  • Brisbane: King George Square 18:00

  • Melbourne: Old Treasury Building 15:00

  • Perth: Northbridge Piazza 13:00

  • Sydney: Town Hall 12:00

Protests in other locations are possible. Dozens to a few hundred people could attend each event.

Police will likely monitor the rallies. While the protests will likely remain peaceful, isolated skirmishes between protesters and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions may occur if demonstrators block or march along roadways.

Avoid the protests as a security precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
