Croatia: Authorities working to contain wildfire in Srinjine as of late Aug. 27
Wildfire response and disruptions ongoing in Srinjine, Croatia, as of late Aug. 27. Road closures, heavy smoke reported.
As of late Aug. 27, crews are working to contain a wildfire burning in Srinjine near Split. The fire began late Aug. 26 following a lightning strike east of Zrnovnica and spread to Srinjin. At least 150 firefighters are responding to the blaze. Several evacuations have been reported; however, as of late Aug. 27, authorities stated that there was no immediate threat to residents of the affected area. Smoke and falling ash were reported within the city of Split.
Transport restrictions are likely on roads near the fire location. Depending on the progression of the wildfire, the status of nearby roads could change over the coming hours and days. Authorities may close additional routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate communities depending on fire activity and the needs of response operators. Power outages are possible in affected areas. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region. Air quality may become poor in Split in the coming days.
Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
