Informational

Activists plan to protest in urban centers across Europe on Aug. 17. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce alleged fraud in Venezuela's July 28 presidential election; the gatherings are in response to Venezuelan opposition leaders' calls for global protests on Aug. 17. Participation will likely vary significantly by location, with larger events attracting several thousand people. Demonstrations slated to take place at the following locations will draw the highest number of participants:

  • Amsterdam, Netherlands: Stationsplein 10 from 13:00.

  • Barcelona, Spain: Arco de Triunfo/Arc de Triomf from 20:00.

  • Basel, Switzerland: Barfuesserplatz from 16:30.

  • Berlin, Germany: Alexanderplatz from 15:00.

  • Budapest, Hungary: Deak Ferenc Ter from 19:00.

  • Hamburg, Germany: Sternschanze (across from Sternschanze Station) from 14:00.

  • Lisbon, Portugal: Participants will gather at the Statue of Bolivar on Avenida da Liberdade from 18:00 before moving to Praca dos Restauradores, where they will protest from 19:00.

  • London, UK: 1 Cromwell Road, South Kensington, from 14:00.

  • Madrid, Spain: Puerta del Sol from 20:00.

  • Marseille, France: Ombriere near Quai des Belges from 17:00.

  • Munich, Germany: Rindermarkt from 13:30.

  • Paris, France: Place de la Pastille from 17:00.

  • Prague, Czech Republic: Vaclavske Namesti (near the equestrian statue of Saint Wenceslas) from 12:00.

  • Rome, Italy: Largo Corrado Ricci-Tempio della Pace from 18:00.

  • Vienna, Austria: Austrian Parliament from 17:00.

Related rallies will also take place at numerous locations elsewhere across the continent, although attendance will probably be markedly lower.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or groups of rival activists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the site of a planned protest. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
