Georgia: Political activists to protest in central Tbilisi Aug. 23-24 /update 1

Pro-Ukrainian activists plan to march and demonstrate in Tbilisi, Georgia, Aug. 23-24; increased security likely.

Informational

Pro-Ukrainian activists plan to hold marches in central Tbilisi Aug. 23-24. The processions are meant to coincide with the occasion of Ukraine's Day of the National Flag and aim to show support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Several hundred people to the low thousand participants are likely to attend. The following protests are planned:

  • Aug. 23: Gathering on the eastern side of the Bridge of Peace from 18:40 before crossing and 19:00 and marching to the western bank of the Kura River, near the bridge.

  • Aug. 24: Gathering at Tara Shevchenko Garden at 19:00 before marching to the Parliament of Georgia.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor the events; localized road travel and transport disruptions are likely near both procession routes Aug. 23-24. Violence is not anticipated; however, minor confrontations between demonstrators and politically opposed individuals are possible.

Avoid the protest area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest sites or march routes. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
