Indonesia: Unionized workers to protest near Horse Statue in Jakarta from 10:00 Aug. 20
Labor unions plan to protest in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 10:00 Aug. 20. Tight security, transport disruptions likely; scuffles possible.
Activists from several labor organizations, including the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) and National Workers Union (SPN), plan to protest near the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue in Jakarta from 10:00 Aug. 20. The action is to denounce the Omnibus Law on Job Creation. A few thousand participants are likely to gather between Merdeka Square and the rally site. Unannounced marches to the Constitutional Court, State Palace, as well as the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), Ministry of Communication and Information, Ministry of Transportation, and Ministry of Trade offices cannot be ruled out.
Increased security measures will likely occur around protest sites, including heightened deployment of security personnel and imposition of traffic restrictions such as security cordons, diversions, and road closures. Minor scuffles are possible, especially if police attempt to disperse demonstrators trying to bypass security barriers. Traffic disruptions are likely near rally sites, in particular Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, especially if activists block or march on roads.
Avoid the protest sites as a precaution. In the event of scuffles, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; do not navigate roadblocks. Monitor trusted local media for protest updates, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
