Demonstrators are demanding the governor vacate the office following her impeachment on Aug. 20 for alleged violation of the constitution, misconduct, and abuse of power. Protesters have been seen blocking streets. During a similar protest on Aug. 26, security forces deployed tear gas after protesters barricaded roads leading to the governor's office.

An increased security presence is likely over the coming hours. Further clashes between police and residents are likely. Localized business and transport disruptions may occur near gathering sites. Additional protests are possible in the coming days.

Meru is located approximately 170 km (107 miles) northeast of Nairobi.
