Kenya: Two foreign nationals kidnapped in Odda, Marsabit County, Aug. 12

Two South Korean missionaries were kidnapped from their residence by unidentified assailants in Odda, Marsabit County, around 21:00 Aug. 12. Reports indicate that the assailants forcibly entered the missionary’s residence within the Odda Mission Church (OMC) Secondary School compound. The motive for the abduction and the identity of the assailants remains unclear. Security forces have launched an operation to rescue the kidnapped missionaries.

Localized transport disruptions are likely in the area and near the Moyale border post; security forces may establish checkpoints and roadblocks and search vehicles.

Odda is located approximately 7 km (4 miles) south of Moyale.

This is the first reported high-profile kidnapping of a foreign national in Kenya since an Italian citizen was upducted in 2018. The threat remains elevated across Kenya but is especially high near Kenya's porous borders with Somalia. In a separate incident on Aug. 12., a group of unidentified gunmen ambushed a truck transporting food near Moyale, Marsabit County, along the Ethiopian border. At least seven people died in the attack, and another two were injured.
