Kenya: Unionized aviation personnel plan to conduct indefinite nationwide strike from Aug. 19
Unionized aviation sector workers plan indefinite strike across Kenya from Aug. 19. Airport, flight disruptions likely.
Employees of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Kenya Airways (KQ) affiliated with the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) will conduct an indefinite nationwide strike from Aug. 19. The action is against a proposed government deal with Indian company Adani Airport Holdings for the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).
The strike is likely to cause disruptions at KAA-run airports across Kenya, including NBO, Moi International Airport (MBA), Kisumu International Airport (KIS), Eldoret International Airport (EDL), Wilson Airport (WIL), and Malindi Airport (MYD). Flight disruptions will likely impact Kenya Airways flights for the duration of the strike. Picket protests are possible at affected airports; heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that take shape.
Reconfirm planned air travel during the strike period. Do not check out of accommodations before onward travel is confirmed. Allow additional time for air travel during the strike period. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near demonstrations.
