Mozambique: Opposition party calls for nationwide protests on Aug. 7 following exclusion from upcoming election

Opposition party calls protests across Mozambique Aug. 7 amid exclusion from upcoming election. Disruptions possible.

Informational

The opposition Democratic Alliance Coalition (Coligacao Alianca Democratica, CAD)) has called for nationwide protests across Mozambique on Aug. 7. The action is to denounce DAC's exclusion from the upcoming general elections, scheduled for Oct. 9. Organizers plan a vigil gathering in the town squares at 20:00. Organizers have also scheduled an associated protest activity at 12:00 and have asked CAD supporters to paint their hands in black and demonstrate in place as a symbol of their dissent; no gatherings are reportedly associated with this action.

Protests are likely nationwide, especially in large urban areas with strong opposition support, such as Maputo, Beira, Nampula, and Quelimane. Security services will likely deploy to monitor and dissuade any political gatherings. Counter-protests from government supporters or other opposition parties are possible. Clashes between rival political groups or between protesters and security services are possible. Associated travel disruptions are possible.

Exercise caution while operating in Mozambique. Avoid all gatherings, especially concentrations of security forces. Exercise caution near public squares and popular gathering locations. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Monitor local news for updates on information on road conditions, as protestors may not announce actions in advance. Heed the advice of local authorities. If encountering police checkpoints, do not attempt to bypass security without authorities' permission.
