New Zealand: Increased volcanic activity reported at Whakaari/White Island volcano in Bay of Plenty Region as of Aug. 22
Increased volcanic activity reported at Whakaari/White Island in Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, Aug. 22. Transport disruptions likely.
Increased volcanic activity has been reported at Whakaari/White Island volcano as of Aug. 22. GeoNet has reported increased volcanic activity since Aug. 9 but advised there is a very low likelihood of ash impacting the mainland. Ash and gas plumes have reached up to 2 km (1.2 miles) above the crater. Authorities are maintaining a volcanic alert level of 3 out of 6, meaning minor volcanic eruptions, and an aviation color code of orange, warning of minor ash emissions.
The emitted volcanic ash affected the flight path of Tauranga (TRG) and Rotorua (ROT) airports early Aug. 22; at least 10 flights were canceled, and three were delayed as a precaution. Most flights have since resumed. Further flight disruptions are possible if an eruption creates a significant ash plume. Ground transport disruptions could also occur. Authorities could suspend or delay rail service. Falling ash could cause slick driving conditions on nearby roads and reduced visibility, leading to localized traffic disruptions.
Heed the advice of local authorities and obey restrictions around the volcano. If larger eruptions occur, confirm flight schedules, especially at TRG and ROT. Drive cautiously, as roads may be slippery from volcanic ash. If operating in areas affected by an ash cloud, consider remaining indoors when possible. Individuals who must be outdoors should use face masks and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation. Volcanic ash and gases can cause eye irritation and respiratory problems. Do not rub irritated eyes; flush them with water. Seek medical attention if you have trouble breathing.
