Residents have reportedly set fire to buildings and vehicles due to discontent with a local politician. Businesses and schools have closed due to the violence. Officials have deployed security personnel to the affected area; however, law enforcement agencies remain generally under-resourced and cannot respond effectively. Over the coming hours, further violent incidents, including looting, arson, and clashes, are possible in Maprik.
