Philippines: Police maintaining heightened security at religious site near Francisco Bangoy International Airport, Davao City, Aug. 28 /update 2
Increased security to continue near Francisco Bangoy International Airport, Davao City, Philippines, as of Aug. 28. Protests possible.
As of the morning of Aug. 28, police are maintaining heightened security measures outside the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) compound in Davao City. Authorities are continuing a security operation to search for the leader of KOJC, Apollo Quiboloy, who is facing multiple criminal charges. Police roadblocks as well as supporters of Quiboloy blocked surrounding roadways and disrupted access to nearby Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) Aug. 25-26. Sources indicate that authorities resorted to the use of tear gas to disperse demonstrators who had set tires alight, resulting in injuries to several protesters and police officers and dozens of others arrested. Supporters may stage additional demonstrations to denounce the police actions against Quiboloy.
Heightened security will likely continue in the affected area over the coming week. Although authorities have removed roadblocks, localized transport disruptions could occur if police re-implement them or if demonstrators block roads. Further violence is possible, especially if security forces attempt to disperse gatherings forcibly. Mass arrests can occur if protesters are overly disruptive.
Avoid any protests that may materialize due to possible violence and to minimize travel delays. Allow additional time for journeys in the affected area, especially if traveling via DVO. Heed all official directives. Leave the area at the first sign of unrest.
