Philippines: Transport groups plan protest march in Cebu City from 08.00 Aug. 5

Jeepney operators plan protest march in Cebu City, Philippines, from 08:00 Aug. 5. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Jeepney operators from at least 22 transport groups will join a protest march in Cebu City from 08:00 Aug. 5. Activists plan to march from Fuente Osmena Circle to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Central Visayas Branch, with planned stops at General Maxilom Avenue. The purpose of the action is to oppose the Senate resolution calling for the temporary suspension of the public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP). Organizers expect at least 2,000 participants to join the action.

Heightened security measures are likely along the march route. Police will probably implement road closures to facilitate the march, prompting localized transport disruptions. While the demonstration will likely pass off peacefully, minor scuffles remain possible between police and protesters cannot be discounted.

Avoid the protest as a precaution. Allow additional travel time near the affected locations; use alternative routes to circumvent the march route. If scuffles break out, leave the area immediately. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
