PNG: Pope Francis to visit Port Moresby and Vanimo Sept. 6-9
Increased security almost certain in Port Moresby and Vanimo, Papua New Guinea, Sept. 6-9. Business, transport disruptions possible.
Extremely tight security is certain across Port Moresby and Vanimo for a visit by Pope Francis Sept. 6-9. Increased security measures and traffic restrictions are likely around event venues, Port Moresby International Airport (POM), Vanimo Airport (VAI), and hotels and routes used by the delegates. Official events are as follows:
Sept. 6: Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive at POM at 19:00.
Sept. 7: Pope Frnacis will visit Governor-General Bob Dadae at Government House 09:45 and attend a gathering with government officials and diplomatic representatives at APEC Haus 10:25. Sept. 9: Pope Francis will meet youths at Sir John Guise Stadium 09:45. He will attend a farewell ceremony at POM 11:10 and depart Port Moresby 11:40.
Increased security is highly likely at stops on the Pope's itinerary. Traffic restrictions, including diversions and road closures, are certain near event venues, especially ahead of the holy mass at Sir John Guise Stadium. Crowds could line streets near event venues to see the pope, though significant disruptions are unlikely at most stops. Increased traffic congestion is possible near event venues as attendees arrive and depart. Closures of educational institutions and businesses along key routes leading to main meeting sites may occur. Authorities could temporarily close the airspace around Port Moresby and Vanimo as the pope arrives and departs the cities, causing potential flight delays at POM and VAI.
An elevated risk of opportunistic crime, such as snatch theft and pickpocketing, is likely at crowded gatherings. While authorities have not publicized any specific threat to the events, a high threat of civil unrest exists nationwide. Enhanced security measures, including vehicular and pedestrian checks, are probable at sensitive sites like major roadways, government buildings, security installations, and crowded public places across Port Moresby and Vanimo through Sept. 9.
Avoid event venues as a security precaution if not attending. Limit exposure to gathering sites and potential militant targets. Remain aware of your surroundings and secure valuables. Allow additional time for transport, including to and from POM and VAI Sept. 6-9. Confirm business appointments and transport reservations to, from, and within Port Moresby. Present proper identification documents and remain cooperative if stopped by officials for checks. Heed all official instructions including transport and security advisories.
