Ecuador: Bus workers maintain strike in Guayaquil as of Sept. 11 /update 1

Bus workers affiliated with the Federation of Urban Transporters of Guayas (Federacion de Transportadores Urbanos del Guayas, FETUG) in the Guayaquil Metropolitan Area maintain a partial strike as of Sept. 11, affecting public transport services in the city. Reports indicate only 22 of the city's 58 bus companies are working. The strike was launched on Sept. 9 to demand an increase in the cost of public bus tickets. Union and government leaders are expected to meet and may reach an agreement to end the strike. Lingering disruptions are likely even after the protest action ends.

Related protests are possible. In addition to directly impacting public transport in Guayaquil, the walkout is likely to result in increased traffic congestion and demand for taxis, app-based ride-sharing, and metro services.
