Ecuador: Increased security likely in Duran after explosive device detonates in supermarket Sept. 19
Supermarket in the El Arbolito neighborhood Duran, Ecuador is bombed Sept. 19; no immediate reports of injuries. Increased security likely.
An explosive device detonated in the TuTi supermarket on Avenida Samuel Cisneros in the El Arbolito neighborhood of Duran Sept. 19. Authorities did not immediately announce any causalities caused by the explosion or whether any group claimed responsibility for the blast.
Localized business and transport disruptions, as well as an increased police presence, are likely near the site of the explosion throughout Sept. 19.
Avoid the area until the police give the all-clear. Allow for additional transport time near the bombing site. Heed the instructions of emergency personnel.
Duran has recently seen significant violence by gangs and drug-trafficking organizations fighting over territory and trafficking routes to the Port of Guayaquil. These criminal groups also frequently extort local businesses, attacking those who fail to make timely payments; one of these groups is likely responsible for the explosion.
