Fiji: Protests possible nationwide through late September following release of failed coup leader from prison
Protests possible across Fiji through late September following release of failed coup leader from prison. Avoid gatherings.
Protests are possible across Fiji through late September following the release of failed coup leader George Speight. Potential gathering sites include government and court buildings, as well as local political party offices, especially in Suva. Dozens to several hundred people could participate in any action.
Any demonstrations that materialize may be accompanied by a heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions. Isolated scuffles are possible between security forces and demonstrators and/or rival ethnic groups.
Exercise caution around government and court buildings, political party offices, and other likely protest sites. Monitor local media or check with trusted local sources for updates on possible demonstrations and associated disruptions, as events could take place with little to no warning. Avoid any protests that may materialize due to the potential for clashes.
Fiji's President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere granted Speight a presidential pardon after he served 24 years in prison for his role in the 2000 coup, during which he seized the Fijian Parliament and held Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and other lawmakers hostage for 56 days. The coup attempt triggered months-long tensions between the indigenous Fijian and the Indo-Fijian communities.
