France: Authorities working to contain wildfire in Cap de Pla as of early evening Sept. 10

Wildfire response continues in Cap de Pla, Narbonne, France, as of early evening Sept. 10. At least 400 firefighters responding.

Warning

Crews are working to contain a wildfire burning in the Cap de Pla area on the western outskirts of Narbonne as of the early evening of Sept. 10. The blaze broke out around 15:30 the same day, eventually growing to encompass about 60 hectares (148 acres). More than 400 firefighters have been deployed in response; however, efforts to contain the fire are reportedly being hampered by strong winds that are contributing to the blaze's growth.

Depending on the progression of the wildfire, the status of nearby roads could change over the coming hours and days. Authorities will likely close routes within the wildfire complex and order localized evacuations depending on fire activity and the needs of response operators. Power outages are possible in affected areas. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the area, including nearby parts of the city of Narbonne.

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
