Georgia: Activists likely to continue protest through late September

Activists likely to protest at Parliament in Tbilisi, Georgia, through late September. Heightened security likely.

Informational

Activists will likely continue their protest at Parliament in Tbilisi through at least late September. They are demanding compensation for property damage allegedly caused by mining projects. Approximately one hundred participants appeared to attend the demonstration on the evening of Sept. 16.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest site. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.

Several affected village residents are participating in the ongoing demonstrations, engaging in hunger strikes; some have also sewn their mouths shut. One of these demonstrators was hospitalized on Sept. 16, which may lead to increased protest participation in the coming days.
