Greece: Emergency crews responding to refinery fire in Agioi Theodoroi Sept. 17

Emergency crews responding to fire at oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi, Greece, Sept. 17. Localized evacuations, disruptions reported.

Warning

Emergency crews were responding to a fire at the Motor Oil Corinth Refinery in Agioi Theodoroi as of the early evening of Sept. 17. Multiple fire crews, at least three helicopters, and 11 fire engines were at the site of the blaze. Factory workers and nearby residents have received calls to evacuate the area. Authorities have reportedly closed Old National Road and halted rail traffic at Kineta and Corinth stations, limiting vehicular and train travel near the fire site. No injuries were reported as of early evening Sept. 17.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the affected area until the fire has been completely extinguished. Transport disruptions will likely remain in effect in the coming hours. Business disruptions are likely near the incident site until authorities complete their operations. Heavy smoke is likely near the fire site. Although authorities had not explicitly mentioned the risk of a hazardous material leak due to the blaze, the burning of petroleum products may release harmful chemicals into the surrounding area.

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time for travel near the scene of the fire. Follow all instructions from security personnel, including any evacuation orders. Consider remaining indoors to avoid smoke exposure, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness such as asthma or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.

The Motor Oil Corinth Refinery is the second largest oil refinery in Greece. Should the fire result in significant structural damage, petroleum product supplies may experience some disruptions. This may lead to business disruptions in the near future.
