Greece: Labor unions to demonstrate at the International Fair in Thessaloniki, Sept. 6-7 /update 1
Labor unions to demonstrate at the International Fair in Thessaloniki, Greece, Sept. 6-7. Increased security likely.
Labor unions plan to demonstrate at the International Fair in Thessaloniki from Sept. 6-7. Multiple unions will demand increased salaries, improved working conditions, and other changes to government industrial policy. The following demonstrations are planned:
Sept. 6: Unionized law enforcement officers will gather at White Tower (Lenko Pyrno) from 18:00 before marching to the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace on Agiou Dimitriou. The planned march route was not immediately published.
Sept. 7: Members of several unions will gather in the YMCA Park at 17:30, at the Venizelos Statue at 18:00, and at the Arch of Galerius (Kamara) from 18:00. It is possible that activists will march from one location to the other.
It is likely that several hundred to several thousand participants will participate in the demonstrations, based on attendance in previous years.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. The event will likely pass off peacefully.
Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating near the impacted areas. Seek alternative routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed the instructions of authorities.
The Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) will run from Sept. 7-15 at the Exhibition and Congress Centre (HELEXPO). It is an annual event, and labor unions have staged parallel demonstrations in recent years.
