Guinea: Activists plan to stage citywide rallies in Conakry Sept. 5
Activists to rally across Conakry, Guinea, Sept. 5. Increased security and localized disruptions likely. Clashes are possible.
Activists associated with the Living Forces of Guinea (Forces Vives de Guinee, FVG) are calling for supporters to rally across Conakry Sept. 5. The FVG is denouncing the third anniversary of the removal of former President Alpha Conde by the military and the formation of the National Committee for Development (CNRD). They are calling for the transitional government to restore public freedoms, end legal proceedings against opposition political leaders and activists, and return to a constitutional government.
Governmental authorities have previously banned demonstrations and threatened to initiate criminal proceedings against the protest organizers if they fail to comply with the ban.
Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence to any areas affected by protest activity. If necessary, security forces may attempt to disperse participating activists forcefully. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Transport and business disruptions will likely affect areas subject to protest activity and increased security.
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent protest activity if protest activity materializes amid related disruptions. If violence breaks out in your location, immediately leave the vicinity and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint or questioned by police. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials and your home government.
